"Beauty Through Complexity"
The Portraiture Series
I began my portraiture series in the Fall of 2019. My shift in this direction was inspired by the desire to showcase individual women in a celebratory nature with expressive patterns, colors, and materials.
Materials
These large pieces consist of acrylic painted portraits on paper with prismacolor overlays. The paper pieces are then collaged and sewn onto stretched fabric backgrounds. The backgrounds are inspired by the subjects themselves with motifs, colors, and textures serving as a collective pattern portrait. Layers of methods and materials are representative of the many layers that make up an individual- the intersectional nature of identity.
This growing body of work is a celebration of individuals, materials, and the beauty through complexity.
