The Woman in the Wallpaper
Woman in the Wallpaper depicts and challenges cultural stereotypes of womanhood while utilizing feminine iconography and domestic patterning along with depictions of embedded figures. Craft skills such as embroidery along with imagery such as florals and ornate plants project conventional gender roles to the viewer. Drawing inspiration from "The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, the work in the sequence explores women being trapped within the constraints of a patriarchal society and uses beauty as an tool to begin conversation.
