Remains

Remains is a series of process based fiber works that explore the persistence of gender ideologies through deconstruction of second-hand domestic materials. Employing these materials associated with the domestic sphere alongside actions that connect to care and labor such as washing and combing, I extract each strand of the fabric's weft individually as an intimate, time demanding act of removal. This removal also serves as a type of reveal. As the weft, the structural fibers, are removed the images remain present, reflecting the persistence of gender hierarchies and aesthetic tropes in which the patterns serve to signify. The full length of the sourced material is always used, and embroidery frames establish further connections with ideas of craft and decoration.
